Liftech engineer and Engineers Alliance for the Arts (EAA) volunteer Derrick Lind organized our third balsa wood bridge competition, and much fun was had by all! Participants designed and built suspension bridges using balsa wood, string, glue, and a wood base. The bridges were judged based on aesthetics and their strength to weight ratio.
Holding 151.6 pounds and weighing only 0.31 pounds, the winners of the competition and the Michael A. Jordan award were Liftech engineer Kenton Lee and Liftech accountant Alicia Tan! Other participants included engineers Erik Soderberg, Derrick Lind, Di Liu, and our in-house counsel Robert Lattuga. Everyone enjoyed watching the different bridges fail, ranging from slowly deforming ductile failures to brittle members failing explosively!
